Movies

‡ Favorite

Disclaimer: I tend to not like movies as much as shows. Some of my favorite aspects of media are world building, character exploration and development, and character relationships. All of these are pretty constrained by the limited duration of a movie, which feels more suited towards expressing a theme or story. This is probably a meandering and verbose way of saying I like media that is longer with bigger worlds and casts. Anyways, probably check out my show list as well.

Title Rating Start date End date Notes
Project Hail Mary 6.5
Goodwill Hunting 9 Presents things I experience but don't consciously acknowledge. Kinda gratuitous. Life affirming.
Shawshank Redemption 6
La La Land 7 November 2025 I find it deeply touching when he goes to help her believe in herself and keep pursuing her passion. "I'll always love you" scenes get to me a bit, and I wonder about how that sentiment plays out in real life for real individuals.
The Martian 8.5
Top Gun: Maverick 7
Blade Runner 6
Interstellar 9.5
Fight Club 8
Blade Runner: 2049 ‡ 10 Heroism despite not being chosen or special. Feels like there is more purpose and less pressure without the weakness of turning away from responsibility/competition.
Howl's Moving Castle 9 Family and tenderness.
Moneyball 7.5 Regret. Keep trying.
We Bought a Zoo 7
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe 7 I remember thinking Peter's virtue of courage was worthless when I first watched this as a kid. I thought what mattered was reality and not our perception of it, and courage is a matter of your self-reflection. As a wise adult, I see this is not the case and courage is very honorable and meaningful.
Ratatouille 7.8
Mulan 8 I think I like that she both is alone and fighting for something but finds a family and reconnects with her own. Also liked the fun side characters and music and visuals.
Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003) 5.5 I still don't understand how what she brought to the team was "intuition."
Taxi Driver 6.8 In the last few weeks I lived in NYC I think about the "too long my body has suffered abuse" sequence where he holds his tensed arm over the burner every once in a while. I generally like intense movies, and this one is. But I don't think I actually like the character or beholding his sequence.
Black Swan 5.5 Senior year of college Really uncomfortable. Not sure if I'm glad I watched it. Nina is like exactly what I don't want to be, and I don't even think I am like her. I don't think this was very edifying or worthwhile for me to watch, but I appreciate it as a cultural artifact.
Inception 7 I personally thought it was well executed but not particularly memorable or personal.
Whiplash ‡ 9 Intensely wanting to achieve greatness and finding it incredibly difficult.
Girl Interrupted 4.5 I feel similarly about this as I do about Black Swan. I think I don't relate to the mental health issues and am not sure if I was edified from seeing it presented this way. Maybe it expanded my world view or augmented my capacity to empathize, but I can't say that with confidence.
The Odyssey 8.9
Oppenheimer 7 As an Amazon intern. It's kinda ridiculous how many sessions it took me to watch this. I should probably rewatch it.
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron 5.5 For some reason this made a big impression as a kid.
Spirited Away 7.5
Anastasia 6.8 It's so pretty.
Peter Pan 6.5
Pocahontas 6.5
